One city that Frederic told me about is Carmel-on-Sea so today, I’m looking forward to discover what it’s all about…We start with the beach which is lovely with the white sand and cypress-covered cliffs but it must be even nicer in summer…!
Une des villes dont Frederic m'a beaucoup parlé, c’est Carmel-sur-Mer alors aujourd'hui, j’ai hâte de la découvrir… Nous commençons par la plage qui est très belle avec le sable blanc et les falaises couvertes de cyprès mais elle doit être encore plus belle en été… !
The houses are cute when they are small and posh when they are big! Carmel is the opposite of an industrial area: only wood is used for signs, gates and most of the houses, most of gardens are very well maintained, franchise businesses are banned and it goes to the extreme of the prohibition of parking meters (which is great!) and street addresses to preserve the natural side!
Les petites maisons sont très mignonnes et les grandes très pompeuses! Carmel est l'opposé des zones industrielles: seulement du bois est utilisé pour les pancartes, les portes et la plupart des maisons, la plupart des jardins sont très bien entretenus, les franchises sont interdites et ça va jusqu’à l’interdiction des parcomètres (ce qui est super en soi!) et des adresses de rue, tout ça pour préserver le côté naturel!
Well, I must say the result is outstanding! It seems like inhabitants are competing to have the nicest looking house and the city centre (downtown as they say it in the US) is a pleasure to explore. There are plenty of charming dead ends, art galleries and chic boutiques.
Et bien, je dois dire que le résultat est exceptionnel ! Ca donne l’impression que les habitants se lancent des défis pour avoir la plus belle maison! Le centre de la ville est aussi un véritable plaisir à découvrir. Il y a une abondance de jolies impasses, de galeries d'art et de boutiques chic.
After cruising in Carmel, we go to visit its sister Monterey but we are at the end of the afternoon and we still have to find a campground! So we just walk in the harbour, the waterfront and Fisherman’s. We look for a place to quickly have an early dinner and the choice is ours as there are so many restaurants who are asking for business (we can feel it’s tough at this moment) and which offer the west coast speciality: the clam chowder. We choose the right restaurant because at the end they offer me a rose! Thank you!
Après s’être promenés dans Carmel, nous allons rapidement rendre visite à sa 'soeur' Monterey car c’est déjà la fin de l'après-midi et nous devons encore trouver un terrain de camping! Alors nous marchons juste le long du port et du front de mer. Nous recherchons un endroit pour dîner tôt et vite fait bien fait, et on n’a que l’embarras du choix ! Il y a tant de restaurants qui ont besoin de clients (nous ressentons que les temps sont durs) et qui offrent la spécialité de la côte ouest : le ragoût de palourde. Nous avons dû choisir le bon restaurant car à la fin une rose m’est offerte! Merci !
We drive to Watsonville, the city of artichokes and…more interesting strawberries! It’s unbelievable the size and number of artichoke and strawberry fields! We’ve never seen that! They are plenty of little shops on the side of the road which are selling fresh vegetables and fruits for cheap price! I’m happy!!!

Nous allons ensuite jusqu’à Watsonville, la ville des artichauts et… des fraises (plus intéressant)! C’est incroyable la taille et le nombre de champs d'artichauts et de fraises ! Nous n'avons jamais vu cela ! Il y a plein de petits magasins au bord de la route qui vendent des légumes et des fruits pour un prix bon marché ! Je suis heureuse ! ! ! Alors…pour finir nous allons donc dormir dans un camping au milieu des champs d'artichauts et de fraises ! ! !
