What do you have to think of and do before leaving?

There are couple of things you have to think of before leaving for few months...


The suitcase...aie aie aie!
I suppose it all depends on where you go and what you're planning to do...Well, in our case, we leave for 7 months going first to Alaska where it's -20 C but also going to Hawaii where it's +30C!!! HOW to pack a 7 months suitcase for winter and summer? Tricky!

We have decided to bring winter clothes with us only that we will desperately need in Alaska! We will invest in a good warm jacket to protect us against the cold, the rain, the wind, the snow and a pair of snow boots. Mmmmh..It's going to be so romantic! When our trip in Alaska will be over...we will post by sea our winter clothes and buy the necessary summer clothe for the rest of our holidays. Clothes are cheap in USA!!! Yeahh!!

However, we've packed things that will be useful during the 7 months such as:

- first aid bag
- frontal torch
- tent which unfolds itself will be bought in France at Decathlon
-any camping equipment (plates, pots, gaz, grill, string to hang out the washing...) will be bought in USA. I'm planning to cook, big time, in the US so I'll have to invest in a mini portable kitchen!
- sleeping bag
- camera
- injection carnet
- PADI card (for diving)
- gifts from SA and France to give along the way
- laptops with good bags to carry them. We also bring our 3G card with us but I think there is wi-fi connection all over US.
- guides about destinations (heavy!)
- multi fonctional knife
- international driving license

Flat and cat?
A friend of ours will look after the place and Shiva, our cat

Cars?
We will keep one in our garage and the other one at a friend's place.
We will disconnect the battery and leave both cars sleeping for 7 months!

Travel insurance?
Don't forget it!

Passports?
Is there enough blank pages left, normally 6 pages are enough.


French version/ Version française

Il y a plusieurs choses auxquelles il faut penser avant de partir pour plusieurs mois...

La Valise...aie aie aie!
Bon, ok! Certes, ca depend en grande partie de la ou des destinations et de ce qu'on compte y faire...Dans notre cas, pour ajouter un petit peu de challenge, nous partons 7 mois, d'abord en Alaska où il fait -20 C et ensuite au Mexique, Hawaii où il fera autour de +30C!!!

COMMENT planifier une valise de 7 mois pour l'été et l'hiver? Mmmmh! Nous avons donc décidé d'emporter avec nous les affaires d'hiver que nous aurons désesperement besoin en Alaska! Nous investirons juste dans un bon, gros et chaud manteau anti-froid, anti-vent, anti- pluie, anti-neige!!! et une bonne paire de bottes, genre esquimau! Ouah, ca va être très très romantique!!! Quand notre voyage en Alaska sera terminé, nous garderons quelques vêtements chauds pour Yosemite (qui sera encore en hiver) et nous posterons le reste pour la France. Nous acheterons les affaires d'été aux US car..les vêtements sont bon marché là-bas, yeeeaaah!!!

Cependant, nous avons pris aussi des choses qui nous serons utiles tout le long de notre voyage telles que:
- trousse de secours
- lampes frontales
- 1 tente qui se déplie d'elle-même, que nous allons acheter en France à Decathlon (a-t-elle aussi l'option remballage automatique??!)
-les équipements de camping (assiettes, casseroles, gaz, grill, fils pour etendre le linge...) seront achetés au US. Je prevois de cuisiner, big time!, pendant notre voyage donc il va falloir que je me constitue une mini cuisine transportable!
- sacs de couchage
- appareil photo
- carnet de vaccination
- carte PADI (fpour la plongee)
- cadeaux d'Afrique du Sud et de France a donner le long de la route
- Ordinateurs portables avec leurs sacs. Nous allons aussi apporter nos cartes 3G mais je pense qu'il y aura des connections sans fils aux US.
- guides sur chaque destination (c'est lourd!)
- couteau multi-fonctions
- permis de conduire international

Appartement et chat?
Une amie va loger dans notre appart er s'occupera de notre chat, Shiva.

Voitures?
Nous allons en laisser une dans notre garage et l'autre chez une amie. Nous déconnecterons les batteries et laisserons nos voitures dormir pour 7 mois!

Assurance voyage?
Ne l'oubliez pas!

Passeports?
Nous avons verifié qu'il y a au moins 6 pages vierges ce qui devraient être suffisant.

After several years of dreaming of a long travel, our departure from Cape Town will be on the 20th of February for a week in France, just to acclimatize ourselves to the cold before going for a month in Alaska!Follow by 1 month in California, 1 month in Baia California/Mexico, 2 months in Hawaii, 1 month in France and 10 days in Dubai! Then we will be back in Cape Town on the 17th of September 2009!We will keep in touch with you along the way via this blog and hopefully make you dream of doing the same thing...and help you achieve it!
